The GENESIS brand belongs to a biotechnology laboratory specialising in the development and production of concentrated freeze-dried pure cultures for the food industry since 1990. Its founder is Dr Eng. Maria Stefanova-Kondratenko, born in Aytos — director of the country’s first Central Experimental Laboratory for the Dairy Industry (ЦЕПЛЧК) at the state Dairy Industry organisation of that time, author of more than 90 scientific papers and publications in Bulgaria and abroad, and holder of 8 inventor’s certificates for her inventions. For more than 20 years she carried out research on the creation and production of pure dairy cultures for milk production in this country.

In the 1970s she began in-depth studies and laboratory experiments with Bulgarian yoghurt and various starters from all over the country. Through immense work and ingenuity she made a revolutionary discovery of national and world importance: she revealed the special living symbiotic relationship between the two dairy microbes Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. The 10 strains isolated in her laboratory are, for now, the only ones of their kind in the world, and they are held under patent protection in the collection of the National Bank for Industrial Microorganisms and Cell Cultures in Sofia.

The discovery received international recognition and was patented in more than 22 countries. In Japan, Bulgarian yoghurt became a symbol of a healthy way of life, and in Finland and Iran the Bulgarian starters were taken up and found wide use in the dairy industry. They became a preferred product both for their traditional beneficial properties and for their scientifically shown beneficial effect on the digestive system and on immunity.
